Written for people who have never rode a train before “Even You Can Do It. How to Ride a Train! Tokyo Version”

Reporter : TEDJA AGNES MICHELLE

1. First, let’s search for information on the place you want to go! On which station do you get off? How much is the ticket? Etc, etc.
2. For example, just say that we are heading to Suginami Animation Museum. I live in Ayase so my starting point is Ayase Station. And the goal is Ogikubo Station. Don’t forget to take a map like this one at the station.
  3. After you arrive at the station, buy the ticket. It’s 270 yen from Ayase Station to Ogikubo Station with 1 transit. Put in 270 yen into the ticket machine and push the 270 button on the screen. (I pick the cheapest route. It’s Ayase Station then transit on Kokkai-gijidou mae Station and lastly Ogikubo Station)

  4. Now let’s head to the platform. But wait! There are 2 types of machines you have to pass first. One is only for IC Card and the other one is for tickets. How do you differentiate it? Just look if there’s a hole for putting in the ticket or not.
  5. There are a lot of subway lines here. Where should you go? Look at the map carefully. At the end of the Chiyoda Line -> the green one (the line where Ayase Station and Kokkai-gijidou mae Station is on) is Yoyogi-Uehara. So you have to get on the train heading for Yoyogi-Uehara.
6. Then you get off at Kokkai-gijidou mae for transit. Left? Or right? Where should you head to? Take a look at the map of the station near you. Ogikubo Station is on Marunouchi Line (the red one) so we just have to go where there is a red circle with M14 written on it.
  7. This line is also divided into 2. Let’s get into the train heading for Ogikubo Station.
8. We finally arrive at Ogikubo Station. Head to the exit. Put in the ticket into the machine again. Before that, don’t forget to search what exit you should go. Suginami Animation Museum is the nearest from the north exit. So let’s go to the north exit.
9. Done! Now, you can ride trains by yourself! Some warnings from me :
- The one I use this time if Tokyo Metro Subway. There are other trains like JR and they all have different routes. The basics are the same but remember to look for each maps.
- Every time the train stops at a station, there will be an announcement. To tell you the truth, I don’t listen to it 1/3 of the time. At those times, I look at the sign above the train doors or look through the window to see the name of the station outside.
- Remember to follow the train rules~ In Japan, do as the Japanese do.
